11:28 am - The Results for The Sequel to The Return of the Summer Name That Movie Quiz

Here's the first batch of answers to my latest Name That Movie Quiz, where you had to identify movies based on a single still. Most -- but not all -- of the stills were from well-known movies -- and two or three might be considered impossibly hard. I thought of encouraging everyone to not cheat by googling the images, but thought that might actually remind or encourage more people to do so. But if I ever do another movie quiz again, I'm going to have to grab my own stills from films, as one friend did check and found that 17 of the 20 films could be ID'd by a google search.

16 readers tried their hand at the quiz. To play along as you read, click through, then scroll down slowly.

05:11 pm - Reminder of the Sequel to the Return of the Name That Movie Quiz!

Win a movie date with thornyc and mudcub, or at least a movie!

You've still got three days to test your skill in my latest Name That Movie Quiz! (Go here: http://thornyc.livejournal.com/694317.html) It's a pretty hard one this time, but even if you can only identify four or five of them, you should try guessing at the others, there's no penalty for wrong guesses.

12:40 pm - The Sequel to The Return of the Summer Name That Movie Quiz

It's the steamy lazy days of summer when I'd rather be inside curled up next to the air conditioner -- and computer -- so I thought it's a good time to once again run my Name That Movie Quiz and see if anyone is still reading my LiveJournal. You're hereby challenged to identify as many of the following movies as possible, based on just a single still. How many do you think you can recognize?

Some are easy. Many are hard, and a few are from lesser-known foreign films. So even if you can only identify half of them, that might be the highest score! And there will be prizes for the top two winners, just in case our usual champion, tycho_anomaly plays again, apparently the man with the cinematic photographic memory. The winner will receive a new or out-of-print DVD of my choosing, and if the winner is local (in the NYC area), they will instead win an invitation to a movie of their choice with me and mudcub.

Instructions are easy. Name each movie, putting your answers in a comment to this post (copy the numbers 1-20 in the first comment). Feel free to guess, there's no penalty for a wrong answer. Most of these movies are popular and well-known, if not notorious, and most of them are favorites of mine for one reason or another. The hard part, of course, is that often I don't use an obviously-recognizable still.

Comments will be "screened"/hidden until the end of the contest on Saturday night, so everyone can play until then.

Have fun!

03:32 pm - Memories of Easter

Not me -- found on the internet for illutrative purposes -- but it's close

Preparations usually started a few days before with the dyeing of the eggs, which I was never crazy about, since I hated the smell of vinegar, and, for that matter, didn't particularly like hard boiled eggs, either.

We wouldn't get whole new outfits, but my Mom would usually make some effort to buy me and my two sisters a new article of clothing, and dress us as nicely as possible. Which usually wasn't a good idea since the day's activities included a big dinner and running around in the backyard and kneeling on the grass looking for hidden eggs. Years later she wised up and let us change out of our clothes after church.

I never did understand or accept either of the stories about the crucifixion and resurrection or a giant bunny hiding eggs -- much less any connection between the two -- but I was grateful for the jelly beans and chocolate bunnies. Back then there weren't all those commercial Easter baskets (now with toys!) at every store, once or twice we got modest ones put together by our Mom. My favorite treat one year was one of those eggs made out of sugar with a small tableau you can peek at inside.

She would trundle us off to First Presbyterian church -- again, I was skeptical, since I had never heard of a Second or Third Presbyterian church, so why try and jack up the importance of your name? -- and we'd fidget through the sermon about resurrection and rebirth. For God so loved the world he sent His Son to suffer and be killed for our sins???!! -- not one bit of that made any sense then and it still doesn't today.

Then we would head to our Grandmother's for an Easter egg hunt and then dinner, usually ham or lamb, but since she learned to cook Italian for her husband, dinner would often include a dish of lasagna, and since she grew up in Jamaica, every meal also included their ubiquitous peas and rice side dish, which we always called rice and beans.

What few traditions I still observe about the holidays usually revolve around food and giving gifts. About the only thing I do each Easter is look for -- and it's very specific -- those mini speckled candy-coated chocolate covered malted milk eggs. I consider it a good Easter if I've found a package of those.
